One of the beautiful places you won’t love to miss in Osogbo is the Nike Center for Art and Culture. Although we have a gallery in Lagos state where a display or sale of works of art. But in Osogbo, where training is offered free of charge to all Nigerians in various forms of arts. It was established in 1983 solely by her earnings as an artist and without governmental assistance.
Nike philanthropy transpired her to take off 20 young girl’s from the street who were marching the street of Osogbo with no hope of making it in life or rather without any future. Already the center was established.
Out of her generosity, she provided them with free food, free materials and free accommodation at her residence at Osogbo and taught them how to use their hands to earn decent living through her work of arts.
So far, Some young Nigerians have been trained in the center and who are now earning their decent living through her work of art. Many African countries now send their students to study textile art at the center. At least I witnessed some at the workshop, I even interviewed them, almost all of them came from different institutions and they all came for industrial training. Adire making was the theme of the day. You can also learn tye and dye, fabrics and textile (Aso-Oke) weaving.
Advise; if you are looking for where to master Adire, I suggest you travel to Osogbo and locate Nike art center. Once you drop at Aregbe bus stop, Don’t stress yourself or panic at all, just stop any bike and tell the bike man, you are going to Nike Art Center, straight up you will see yourself there just hold your 200naira. Later you come thank me. They also have a guest house in which the interior design and structure was made by art and the structure is magnificent in old fashioned.
The sweetest part about this guest house is the garden. I called it the garden of Eden. The Garden is so beautiful, calm, and flows with a good health of soft breeze, with squirrels locomoting round the garden. Haaa!!! For once, I breathe in healthy oxygen through my lungs. Lastly, the guest is safe to stay with good security and light but not up to 24 hrs but be rest assured there will be light all through the night.
Nike also has a gallery in Osogbo but not as beautiful as the gallery in Lagos state. If you have not visited the gallery in Lagos state, you are really missing a lot. Try to visit the gallery and thank me later.
